Back to school!

We are now into week 2 of school and boy has it been busy! I have a contract at a private school for the term, teaching grade 4-6 science. The school has a prep school (primary, gr 3-6) and an upper school (secondary7-11 & 6th form) spread across a few blocks. The prep school is housed in some historic houses. I am lucky as my science lab is at the top of the building with bay windows overlooking the Thames. It is 3.5km from home so I have been walking to/from so good free exercise instead of paying a fortune for the gym.

As there is a huge freeway separating the prep and upper schools, they have their very own underpass to connect the schools. Prep kids go to the upper for music, upper kids go to prep for sport etc. The staff have all been amazing. I just meet someone and they are asking if I need anything, if they can help me at all etc. Really wonderful. The other awesome bonus of the job is that all staff are provided with a free cooked meal for lunch. Every. Single. Day. Wow! Today for example, I had Shepherds Pie with roast veg, peas, garlic bread, potato salad and a sugar free apple and berry crumble with custard for dessert. Every day there are 3 main options (meat, veg, other), soup, vegies of some form, 2-3 salad options, baked potato bar with toppings such as baked beans, pulled pork, tuna mayo etc, fresh bread rolls and for dessert you get a hot option like crumble, cheesecake etc, and then jelly, fruit tubs and fresh fruit. It is incredible. Tomorrow I am having butter chicken for lunch! Due to covid it is now served in bento boxes that they wash & reuse. Here is my lunch last week: beef stir-fry, chicken caesar salad, roast potato, mixed veg & orange rice pudding.

On the weekend I ventured into the city to Leicester Square. I went to M&M's World and had fun choosing a selection of chocolate. Afterwards I went for a walk to find the new Harry Potter statue in Leicester Square, then headed back to Tottenham Court Road. On the way I found an unofficial Harry Potter shop and got lost in the world of magic for a while.

I decided to head to Holland Park next. In spring they have a big wisteria display so I wanted to check it out as well as enjoy the sunshine. The park was very busy with people soaking up the sun. There were lots of squirrels running around which was cute.

Last I walked over to Westfield. Along the way I saw some gorgeous houses. All wow with black trims, just my style! It is the only one in London and it is huge. We can go retail shopping now under current restrictions so it was nice to be able to walk around like pre-covid times. They have a strict entry/exit procedure with only certain doors allowed to be used for entry and others for exit. I also found a Boost Juice, which I didn't realise was outside Australia.

Nothing planned yet for the future weekends as I am getting things organised for school. Loving the sunshine every day which is great!

Charming Croatia, Montenegro & Bosnia and Herzegovina

Hello hello and welcome to sunny Croatia! A few weeks ago I decided I really wanted to get away in the October half term and luck was on my side. I managed to find return flights from London to Dubrovnik for £75 and when I searched accommodation for the dates, Booking.com was giving me a 50% discount on the hostel I was looking at. That's return flights & 4 nights accommodation for just £140. So naturally, I booked it on the spot. I haven't been to Croatia before, and Dubrovnik is close to Bosnia and Herzegovina & Montenegro so I could do 3 countries!   Day 1 London to Dubrovnik I really wasn’t sure how early to get to Stansted Airport (no checked luggage) so I decided to arrive 2.5hrs early.   It’s easy but expensive to get to this airport. The Stansted Express is a nice train but its presiding is based on demand so today cost me £35 return. Yikes! I’m very much looking forward to this trip though. It's going to be warm & sunny and I'm going t...

New Zealand part 2 & a glimpse of China!

Welcome to part 2 of my New Zealand and China adventure!   Day 10 Arrowtown I tried to have another sleep in today, but one of the guys in my dorm was up early to go skiing, and left the bathroom light on while he got ready, which has an in-built fan. I went and grabbed breakfast, then came back to my room and had breakfast in bed. I got an apple crumble porridge and my usual coffee. In the coffee shop, the girl was the same as the one from the other day, and she told me she decided to book some ski lessons after our conversation the other day. The guy in there also told me that he thought there were a lot of speeding skiers/boarders last night, far more than normal, and he is an experienced skier. I’m glad it was just me feeling that!   Then I had to pack. I sorted out my things and got my suitcases to exactly 23kg. My backpack is going to be heavy on my journey home!   I planned to go to Arrowtown today. It is a nearby town that has a historic part,...

Awe inspiring New Zealand

Welcome to New Zealand, one of the most beautiful countries on the planet.   This summer holidays, I decided I wanted to go skiing in New Zealand, to get some more experience. Since I was going to be close to home, I figured I should probably cross the ditch and visit some friends & family back home. Also, I miss home, especially the food.   At the beginning of July, I flew to Sydney and spent the next two weeks with my friend Belinda and her family. It has been 3.5yrs since we last saw each other so it was really great to see them. After Sydney, I flew to Melbourne and stayed at my mums for the next 10 days. We took a trip to Albury to visit my nana, which was great, and I got to see my teacher friends, and family members.   I had a huge list of food I wanted to buy to bring back to the UK as well. I ended up going way overboard and buying a ton of junk food!   And now it is time to head to New Zealand!     Day 1 Melbourne ...
