Another wonderful week in London

This week was my second week at the school, covering the food tech classes. It was another good week and this time I had to supervise online classes. One teacher is at school but has to shield by doing limited classes. She teaches with a webcam in one room, I supervise the students in another room watching her. Another teacher is teaching from home full time due to shielding. Interesting learning curve as I didn't have to do that at home.

No adventures during the week but today I took myself to the next suburb to the Ealing Farmers Market. Turns out it is quite a small market so it didn't take long to explore.

A short walk from West Ealing to Ealing resulted in the discovery of a food market (lunch food). The choices today: gozleme, souvlaki, biriyani, nasi goreng, biltong, german sausages and steak & chips. I chose the steak and chips. It was called marinated bavette, which I googled and discovered it is a flank steak. It was served with wild mushroom & black truffle sauce and it was absoltely delicious.

Ealing is quite a busy area and there are some cool buildings. There is also a Marks & Spencer, large Tesco Metro and the new and unique Amazon Fresh supermarket. The Amazon Fresh concept is great. You get the QR code from the Amazon app on your phone, scan the code to get access to the store, grab the items you want, put them in your bag and then walk out. Like literally put the items in your handbag or backpack and just walk out the front door. The system somehow senses the items you take off the shelf and when you walk out the door they charge the credit card you have on file with Amazon. No registers, no queues. It was a cool, novelty experience.

Another interesting experience today. Sitting at the train station I hear a rumble and then all of a sudden a train goes absolutely flying through the station at a hundred miles an hour (literally!! I asked a station attendant!). So unbelievably fast through a station. They are the trains that head out to the country and they don't stop at many city stations.

That's all for this weekly update. On Monday we are allowed to do day trips and school finishes on Wednesday so next weekend over Easter I will hopefully be able to get out and see the countryside. Yay!

Charming Croatia, Montenegro & Bosnia and Herzegovina

Hello hello and welcome to sunny Croatia! A few weeks ago I decided I really wanted to get away in the October half term and luck was on my side. I managed to find return flights from London to Dubrovnik for £75 and when I searched accommodation for the dates, Booking.com was giving me a 50% discount on the hostel I was looking at. That's return flights & 4 nights accommodation for just £140. So naturally, I booked it on the spot. I haven't been to Croatia before, and Dubrovnik is close to Bosnia and Herzegovina & Montenegro so I could do 3 countries!   Day 1 London to Dubrovnik I really wasn’t sure how early to get to Stansted Airport (no checked luggage) so I decided to arrive 2.5hrs early.   It’s easy but expensive to get to this airport. The Stansted Express is a nice train but its presiding is based on demand so today cost me £35 return. Yikes! I’m very much looking forward to this trip though. It's going to be warm & sunny and I'm going t...

New Zealand part 2 & a glimpse of China!

Welcome to part 2 of my New Zealand and China adventure!   Day 10 Arrowtown I tried to have another sleep in today, but one of the guys in my dorm was up early to go skiing, and left the bathroom light on while he got ready, which has an in-built fan. I went and grabbed breakfast, then came back to my room and had breakfast in bed. I got an apple crumble porridge and my usual coffee. In the coffee shop, the girl was the same as the one from the other day, and she told me she decided to book some ski lessons after our conversation the other day. The guy in there also told me that he thought there were a lot of speeding skiers/boarders last night, far more than normal, and he is an experienced skier. I’m glad it was just me feeling that!   Then I had to pack. I sorted out my things and got my suitcases to exactly 23kg. My backpack is going to be heavy on my journey home!   I planned to go to Arrowtown today. It is a nearby town that has a historic part,...

Awe inspiring New Zealand

Welcome to New Zealand, one of the most beautiful countries on the planet.   This summer holidays, I decided I wanted to go skiing in New Zealand, to get some more experience. Since I was going to be close to home, I figured I should probably cross the ditch and visit some friends & family back home. Also, I miss home, especially the food.   At the beginning of July, I flew to Sydney and spent the next two weeks with my friend Belinda and her family. It has been 3.5yrs since we last saw each other so it was really great to see them. After Sydney, I flew to Melbourne and stayed at my mums for the next 10 days. We took a trip to Albury to visit my nana, which was great, and I got to see my teacher friends, and family members.   I had a huge list of food I wanted to buy to bring back to the UK as well. I ended up going way overboard and buying a ton of junk food!   And now it is time to head to New Zealand!     Day 1 Melbourne ...
