Welcome to the UK!

A few years ago I became really unhappy with my life, feeling lost and lonely. I toyed with the idea of moving overseas but it wasn't until 2 years later that I put that plan into motion. Last year I sold my house & car, and either donated or sold almost all my possessions. I was moving to London to teach science and I was very excited!

Due to covid, this plan then was put on hold. 9 long months I was waiting, with no idea when I would be able to go, and no permanent living situation. In the end, I had enough and decided it was time to go, pandemic or no pandemic. My mental health needed to go, and schools were operating.

So on Wednesday I started the process and applied for a new exemption to leave Australia and booked my covid test in Sydney. Yesterday I boarded a Japan Airlines flight bound for London via Tokyo. We had less than 20 people on the flight, which meant we had plenty of space. Excellent food and outstanding service made the flight a great experience.

The 7.5hrs transit in Tokyo Haneda airport was long. Very long. There was not one single shop open, and only 2 vending machines with a small selection of drinks and snacks. For the last 2hrs of the transit we were allowed entry into the JAL Sakura First Class Lounge which was nice as we got some free food and drinks.

The second flight was busier than the first but less than 30 people I think. As it was 3am we literally took off and then went to sleep. Again we had great food and great service. Highly recommend JAL for future flights when the pandemic is over.

In London Heathrow Airport we were hded to the customs area to join the several hundred other people all queued up. Social distancing was limited and there seemed to be people from red countries mixing with people from other countries. Not a great start.

After a 1hr Uber ride I finally arrived at my hotel. It is a wonderful apartment with full kitchen facilities and washing machine in a studio unit. The heated floor and towel rails in the bathroom are a nice touch!

There is a Tesco Express and Sainsbury Local just down the road so I went and got some groceries to feed me for the next week or so. I have a 10 day self-isolation period so future groceries will be delivered if possible.

My covid tests arrived today too. I have to self test on days 2 and 8 and post the samples off. I have to voluntarily stick the swab down my own throat and nose. Yuk! Hopefully they both come back negative so I can leave after my 10 days.

I will post updates on this blog maybe weekly, posting about my experiences, frustrations, places I visit and trips  I take (after restrictions are lifted of course).

Follow along to see what I am up to!

Charming Croatia, Montenegro & Bosnia and Herzegovina

Hello hello and welcome to sunny Croatia! A few weeks ago I decided I really wanted to get away in the October half term and luck was on my side. I managed to find return flights from London to Dubrovnik for £75 and when I searched accommodation for the dates, Booking.com was giving me a 50% discount on the hostel I was looking at. That's return flights & 4 nights accommodation for just £140. So naturally, I booked it on the spot. I haven't been to Croatia before, and Dubrovnik is close to Bosnia and Herzegovina & Montenegro so I could do 3 countries!   Day 1 London to Dubrovnik I really wasn’t sure how early to get to Stansted Airport (no checked luggage) so I decided to arrive 2.5hrs early.   It’s easy but expensive to get to this airport. The Stansted Express is a nice train but its presiding is based on demand so today cost me £35 return. Yikes! I’m very much looking forward to this trip though. It's going to be warm & sunny and I'm going t...

New Zealand part 2 & a glimpse of China!

Welcome to part 2 of my New Zealand and China adventure!   Day 10 Arrowtown I tried to have another sleep in today, but one of the guys in my dorm was up early to go skiing, and left the bathroom light on while he got ready, which has an in-built fan. I went and grabbed breakfast, then came back to my room and had breakfast in bed. I got an apple crumble porridge and my usual coffee. In the coffee shop, the girl was the same as the one from the other day, and she told me she decided to book some ski lessons after our conversation the other day. The guy in there also told me that he thought there were a lot of speeding skiers/boarders last night, far more than normal, and he is an experienced skier. I’m glad it was just me feeling that!   Then I had to pack. I sorted out my things and got my suitcases to exactly 23kg. My backpack is going to be heavy on my journey home!   I planned to go to Arrowtown today. It is a nearby town that has a historic part,...

Awe inspiring New Zealand

Welcome to New Zealand, one of the most beautiful countries on the planet.   This summer holidays, I decided I wanted to go skiing in New Zealand, to get some more experience. Since I was going to be close to home, I figured I should probably cross the ditch and visit some friends & family back home. Also, I miss home, especially the food.   At the beginning of July, I flew to Sydney and spent the next two weeks with my friend Belinda and her family. It has been 3.5yrs since we last saw each other so it was really great to see them. After Sydney, I flew to Melbourne and stayed at my mums for the next 10 days. We took a trip to Albury to visit my nana, which was great, and I got to see my teacher friends, and family members.   I had a huge list of food I wanted to buy to bring back to the UK as well. I ended up going way overboard and buying a ton of junk food!   And now it is time to head to New Zealand!     Day 1 Melbourne ...
